From Maternity Leave to Business Owner: My Journey to Executive Assistance

WHERE MY EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT JOURNEY BEGAN
I didn’t always work in Executive Assistance. I spent over 10 years in the construction industry working as a PA to senior team members. It was fast-paced, high-pressure, and always moving, and it’s where I learned to manage priorities, organise systems, and work across teams to keep projects and people organised and on track. I loved it.
However, as life often does, things changed, and in 2019, I took maternity leave with my second child. Like many postpartum mums, I began to rethink my future and the kind of career I wanted, so I could be home with my children more, while still working and returning to work wasn’t an option. Not because I’d fallen out of love with it, but because it no longer offered the kind of flexibility I wanted for myself and my children.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS - MAKE LEMONADE

While on maternity leave, I discovered remote virtual assistance, and what started as a small idea quickly turned into a business plan to support other business owners behind the scenes in their operations.
I applied every skill I learned, including organisation, systems management, project management, and accounting. I set up KRVA (Katie Rodwell Virtual Assistant), supporting business owners who were overwhelmed and burnt out by the day-to-day of running their business (it’s no easy feat, running a business and keeping up with general life responsibilities).
It wasn’t easy. There were so many moments I almost gave up. I remember going back to job hunting, but I couldn’t let go of the idea, and so I went all in.
I started getting more clients, and as demand grew, so did my experience, not just in what I do, but in running a business. I learned so much from the amazing clients I had the opportunity to work with. In 2023, I took my skills to the next level with remote executive assistance, and thus, Katie Rodwell Remote Executive Assistance was born.
FAST FORWARD TO 2025 AND THE FULL SCOPE OF WHAT I DO FOR MY AMAZING CLIENTS & THEIR BIZ
Today, I still support small business owners who need more than “just a bit of help” but I have the capacity and the skill to impact how they work in their day to day, their business processes, managing their schedules and giving them the capacity to do what they to best, generate more income and create the work/life balance they have been praying for.
And that’s my story. It’s been a life-changing journey in so many ways, but most importantly, not only do I get to support some of the best business owners I’ve met, but I also have the flexibility in my own home life that I so desperately wanted. I get to watch my kids grow up, and I get to support others to do the same, among many other things.
